New Hdtv DVD Technology Challenges current formats
As if the format war between HD DVD and Blu-ray high definition DVD formats are not heated enough, is likely to be another player who enters the ring in the immediate future. A virtually unknown company called New Medium Enterprises is set release its own disc format called HD VMD HD.
Unlike Blu-ray and HD DVD, HD VMD takes advantage of existing red laser technology for read data discs. This use of an established technology makes the HD VMD technology much cheaper than HD DVD or Blu-ray. In fact, while players HD DVD sticking around three hundred dollars a piece and Blu-ray players have only recently fallen below five hundred dollars, HD VMD players probably cost about a hundred and fifty dollars when they first arrive at retail stores like Costco and Radio Shack. Besides the less expensive players, the discs should cost less too. HD VMD discs are expected to cost significantly less than either of the two formats set (if you can call two formats found in the midst of a bitter format war and prolonged template) and a little more than conventional DVD.
Before anyone gets too excited about the possibility to watch HD movies out of a disc, it should be noted that there are still very few titles available on HD VMD format. In fact, there are only twenty titles that come from the United States and most of them come from small independent studios, including one owned by Mel Gibson. In addition to the twenty titles in America, there will be a variety of foreign securities, including Indian Bollywood movies.
Of course, there is an amount considerable skepticism about the possibility of a small company start coming out of nowhere to end the efforts of two large companies such as Toshiba and Sony. This is especially hard to believe when you consider the fact that Blu-ray and HD DVD is backed by some very important studies of the motion picture, but that does not mean impossible. After all, the ability to buy a player by his nearest competitor, and less than one third the price of the closest competitor of others can be very attractive to consumers and large companies must ultimately give consumers what they want. There will be a great economic pressure to release movie titles on HD VMD.
At this time the technical details of the HD VMD format is not yet clear, but there are some things we can speculate about this new format. First, because we know that the HD VMD technology is based on the same red laser than conventional DVD's and CD's are based, we can guess that HD VMD disc can not store much data as Blu-ray or HD DVD which are both based on blue-violet laser technology. This is a reasonable conjecture that a laser Violet Blue has a shorter wavelength and therefore can encode more information, more finely in a record that the longer wavelength of a color laser Red can. This could not really be a big problem when you look at the fact that Blu-ray disc can store much more data than HD DVD can however, can still be used for storing high-definition movies.
Only time will tell how this great challenge to HDTV DVD format at all, but it could be a case where the primitive technology overcomes most advanced technology because of the economy.
