What is the best / least expensive HD camcorder?
I want a nice HD camera, but I will not go into debt to buy one. I am research to use for short films, so I need something decent.
It's a great question! You have several options, but I do not think you can find a good HD camcorder for under $ 700. Here are some of my favorites ordered starting with the best: Entry level: 1 Sony HDR)-HC3 [or step-ups, the HC9] 2) Canon HV20 [or step up, the HV30] Both cameras are excellent for point-and-shoot film, but do not spend enough for filmmaker seriously because they have no quality control manuals. Furthermore, neither are true HD, but they are probably the closest you can get in a consumer camcorder. Both are HDV camcorders, which means they record MiniDV cassettes. Many people do not, but I recommends more Hard Drive especially flash memory and DVD camcorders. HDV compresses the footage at least, if you have the best resolution. They are also much easier to edit, you have many more options to choose from as far as editing programs. If you feel you have the money extra to go for a prosumer / professional camcorders, here are my recommendations: 1) Sony PMW-EX1 2) JVC GY-HD200U 3) Panasonic AG-HVX200 4) Canon XH-A1 5) Sony HVR-V1U http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ choice Any of these cameras would be excellent if you choose traditional way, but I think the best option, and one of the least expensive, the camera is relatively unknown, Scarlet. The Red Scarlet is still in development but expected to release in 2009. According to Red, this device is a "pocket professional camera" designed for all those "soccer moms to independent filmmakers. It should go for under $ 3000! For a professional camera, a total steal! But what makes the scarlet so much better than others? Well, most HD cameras do not shoot in true HD, as mentioned above. Standard HD has a screen resolution of 1920×1080 lines. The camera prosumer only shoots in true 1920×1080 is the Sony EX1 and that costs more than $ 6,000. The Scarlet, however, recordings of sequences in 3K resolution which is about 150% the resolution of the EX1? All this for $ 3000. Otherwise, I do not know all that much about the Scarlet, but it certainly something needs to be studied .. Scarlet red is more than decent, and would be perfect for short films.
