What video settings should be altered when connected to an HDTV via DVI probe?

I have a 128MB ATI Mobile Radeon on my laptop connected to a Toshiba Hi-Def tube through an HDMI cable connected to a DVI to HDMI on my laptop. All what I see in each resolution is a screen flickers and does not display anything properly. What values should I change my video card to solve this problem?

Set the resolution to the lowest possible using the lowest frequency and move from there.
